This
music is typically all instrumental of from 3 to 5 pieces, presented without
vocals. It is heard as a complement to other event functions such as cocktails
and dinner. Depending on the repertoire played, dancing is less common
with these bands than is easy listening. As examples, the
Band samples on page right each feature a different instrument: piano,
guitar, saxophone, trumpet, electric violin, vibraphone, organ, banjo
and finally multiple horns in an 8 piece Big Band.

|
This style of music covers a historic period of the 1930's-1950's. The Swing and the Big Band eras merged and overlapped each other with distinctions to made between East and West coast styles. The instrumental character is wonderful for a background wash of sound as well as for slow and fast dancing. Often including both a male and female singer this band features horns: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section.

| Dance
Bands Some focus on a few musical styles while others, especially wedding bands, cover a wide range of styles, 1940's-Today. A few bands perform original material while most do 'cover' material by others. The Band you ultimately choose for your event should be the one whose singers and music interpretation across all of the styles of repertoire feel the most fun and energetic for dancing. Dance Bands typically feature both male and female singers performing the lyrics so intrinsic to most all dance music. Dance Bands can break down into a smaller group playing music as a background sound during dinner conversation saving the louder, more energetic danceable tunes for later. Dance Bands come in different sizes: 4-PIECE BANDS can sound surprisingly full. These typically utilize keyboard, bass, drums, & guitar. Horn parts are synthesized. Most instrumentalists also sing. These smaller bands tend to be all male. Hear samples on page right. 5-PIECE BANDS add saxophone/flute and add a lead female singer in addition to the male singer/ instrumentalists. They can play a greater range of music styles and tune titles. Hear samples on page right. 7 to 9-PIECE BANDS have a full horn section first adding trumpet, then trombone. They have more than one lead singer. They can often have choreographed dancers for more visual show. Hear samples on page right.
